- General Medical Training and Membership of Royal College of Physicians (or Membership of Royal College of Paediatrics if aim to become paediatric dermatologist).
- Involvement in research helpful.
Training
- Senior House Officer in Dermatology (this is usually necessary in order to compete successfully for a SpR number, and is useful as an introduction to the specialty).
- Specialist Registrar in Dermatology (NTN). Initially general dermatological training, subsequently training in each of the subspecialities in dermatology (photobiology, dermatological surgery, contact dermatitis, etc.).
- There are benefits to carrying out research for a MD thesis during training, as this will provide a solid understanding of research and a greater ability to critically evaluate journal articles (both of which are necessary for life-long learning). It is helpful if the planning of the research is undertaken during the earlier stages of clinical dermatology training so that appropriate funding can be obtained. It is also important that the trainee has a suitable research supervisor who has adequate experience in research methodology and procurement of research funds.
- Post-SpR Fellowship (optional, but extremely useful for further specialisation, e.g. for Mohs surgery, photobiology, dermatopathology, research, etc.).
Senior Position
- Consultant in University Hospital or in District General Hospital. Special interests / clinics / duties determined by previous training.
